Growing the Next Generation

KidsGardening.org strives to make the many benefits of gardening available to all. As the national nonprofit leader in garden-based education, over the past 32 years they have awarded grants to 10,000 youth gardening programs in 15 different counties, enriching the lives of 2.2 million young gardeners. Through their websites, KidsGardening.org and Garden.org , they provide free gardening and educational resources to educators, families, and home and community gardeners of all ages. They are based in Vermont.

Nevada also has lots of gardening help places. Besides the local retail nurseries, there is the UNR Coop Extension. They have several programs for children and families. Over in Truckee, CA, just north of I-80 there are master gardeners who are very willing to help you at the Villager Nursery.

The Nevada Division of Forestry State Tree Nursery at Washoe Lake will be opening May 7. It is located at 885 Eastlake Blvd, Carson City, NV 89704 and phones are (775) 849-0213, Fax (775) 849-2058. See their website for lots of information about plants for Big Basin and Sierra Nevada – our kind of native plants. (The Washoe Nursery will be hosting a Monarch Butterfly and Native Plant Workshop on May 23, 2015. Click here for registration information.)

The Native Plant Society of Nevada website contains information such as Growing Native Plants: Selection and Cultivation of Nevada Native Plants.

Get beyond the Southern Nevada comments to find good info at Nevada Native Plants – as well as SELECTED NATIVE SHRUBS OF NORTHERN NEVADA: Are They Right for the Home Landscape? by UNR Coop Extension experts JoAnne Skelly, Extension Educator, Carson City/Storey County and Kent McAdoo, Natural Resource Specialist, Central/Northeast Area.

The Reno Gazette Journal had this article a couple days ago: Master Gardener: Starting Your Seeds Indoors This Spring To Prepare For Planting.
